R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Stuart Geiger of Dallas passed |
|
away on October 16, 2013, at the age of 77, drawing to a close a |
|
remarkable life that included service as a state representative and |
|
as a successful attorney; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Dallas on February 21, 1936, to Gilbert and |
|
Letitia Geiger, Dick Geiger graduated from W. H. Adamson High |
|
School in 1953; he went on to earn a bachelor of law degree from the |
|
Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in 1961 and soon |
|
embarked on his legal career, earning admittance to the State Bar of |
|
Texas in 1962; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Geiger entered politics in 1972, when he |
|
conducted a successful campaign for the District 33-G seat in the |
|
Texas House of Representatives, and his outstanding efforts on |
|
behalf of his constituents in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas earned |
|
him reelection two years later; over the course of his two terms in |
|
office, he served as a member of numerous committees, including |
|
those focused on transportation, health and welfare, and elections, |
|
and he was vice chair of the State Affairs Committee and chair of |
|
its Subcommittee on Housing and Urban Rehabilitation; moreover, he |
|
became a delegate to the Texas Constitutional Convention of 1974; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1977, Mr. Geiger joined the law office of |
|
Thompson, Coe, Cousins & Irons, LLP, where he earned widespread |
|
acclaim for his expertise in insurance law; he was named managing |
|
partner of the firm in 1995 and went on to play an instrumental role |
|
in the dramatic expansion of the business; following an exemplary |
|
28-year tenure with the office, he retired in 2005; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Geiger further distinguished himself through |
|
his involvement with a number of professional organizations; he |
|
helped establish the Insurance Council of Texas in 1996 and the ICT |
|
Education Foundation in 2007, and he held the post of general |
|
counsel for ICT as well as for the Texas Automobile Insurance Plan |
|
Association for many years; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to his other responsibilities, this |
|
eminent Texan benefited his community and his profession by serving |
|
as a member of the board for such organizations as the Texas Legal |
|
Protection Plan, Home Health Services of Texas, the Dallas |
|
Zoological Society, the Turtle Creek Association, and the W. H. |
|
Adamson Scholarship Foundation; and |
|
WHEREAS, Held in high regard by his peers, Mr. Geiger was |
|
listed as one of the Best Lawyers in America three times and was |
|
named as a Leading Lawyer in America by Chambers and Partners for 10 |
|
consecutive years; in addition, he was presented with the Raymond |
|
Mauk Leadership Award from the ICT in 2007, was inducted into the |
|
Adamson High School Hall of Honor in 2012, and received a Lifetime |
|
Achievement Award from the W. H. Adamson Scholarship Foundation in |
|
2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Geiger exchanged the vows of matrimony with his |
|
childhood sweetheart, the former Phyllis McGee, in 1954, and the |
|
couple shared a close and rewarding union that spanned nearly six |
|
decades until her passing in August 2012; they raised five |
|
children, Scott, Angela, Margaret, Claire, and Amy, and with the |
|
passing years, their family grew to include 13 grandchildren and a |
|
great-grandson; and |
|
WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, his profession, and his |
|
fellow citizens, Dick Geiger made a meaningful and positive |
|
difference in many lives, and his notable record of achievement |
|
will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Richard Stuart Geiger |
|
and extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
children, Scott Geiger and his wife, Kathleen, Angela and Margaret |
|
Geiger, Claire Vail and her husband, Kevin, and Amy McCarty and her |
|
husband, Frank; to his sisters, Theresa Ramsey, Emalee McRoberts, |
|
and Susan Lynn Wilbur; to his grandchildren, Andrew and John |
|
Allard, Elisabeth Allard-Davenport, Richard and Audrey Geiger, |
|
Richard, Laurence, and Cecilia Lau, Grace and Charles Walworth, and |
|
Emily, Rachel, and Ian McCarty; to his great-grandson, Mason |
|
Allard; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it |
|
further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dick |
|
Geiger. |
