WHEREAS, The tragic death of George Perry Floyd Jr. on May 25, | ||
2020, at the age of 46, deeply saddened many people around the | ||
country and across the world, including his friends and loved ones | ||
in the State of Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, George Floyd was born in Fayetteville, North | ||
Carolina, on October 14, 1973, to George Perry and Larcenia Jones | ||
Floyd; when he was just an infant, his family moved to Houston, | ||
where he was raised in the Cuney Homes housing project in the Third | ||
Ward neighborhood; as an athletic young man who stood at 6 feet, 7 | ||
inches tall, he emerged as a star football and basketball player at | ||
Jack Yates High School, where he was on the football team that | ||
competed for the 1992 state championship; and | ||
WHEREAS, After graduating in 1993, Mr. Floyd studied at South | ||
Florida State College before returning to Texas and transferring to | ||
Texas A&M University-Kingsville; using the nickname "Big Floyd" | ||
that he had earned during his days as an athlete, he went on to | ||
collaborate as a freestyle rapper with DJ Screw, an influential | ||
figure in Houston's hip-hop scene; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd began a new chapter in his life when he | ||
moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, and found work as a truck driver, a | ||
security guard, and a bouncer; as he had in Houston, he readily | ||
endeared himself to new friends in the city, where he was known as a | ||
gentle giant with a broad smile and a contagious sense of humor; | ||
despite his imposing stature, his genuine kindness shone through in | ||
his words and actions, especially in the generous way that he | ||
supported those around him and encouraged them to reach their full | ||
potential; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Floyd was the loving father of three children, | ||
Tangie, Gianna, and Tyson; he shared a rewarding relationship with | ||
his partner, Courteney Ross, and he enjoyed the affection of a large | ||
extended family; and | ||
WHEREAS, Although nearly a year has passed since George | ||
Floyd's death shook the nation, he will forever be remembered not | ||
only for his profound role in the fight for social justice and | ||
change but also for uplifting countless people with his love and | ||
friendship; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of George Perry Floyd Jr. | ||
and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and to all those who | ||
have mourned alongside them; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George | ||
Floyd. |
