WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed musician and educator drew | ||
to a close with the passing of Edward G. Olivares of Corpus Christi | ||
on June 21, 2017, at the age of 86; and | ||
WHEREAS, Eddie Olivares was born to Audelio and Susana | ||
Olivares on February 28, 1931, in Mercedes, and he grew up with the | ||
companionship of six siblings; his brother gave him his first | ||
trumpet when he was 12, and by the age of 14 he was playing in dance | ||
bands; a 1949 graduate of Corpus Christi High School, Mr. Olivares | ||
continued his education at Del Mar College, earning an associate | ||
degree in 1952; he then served for two years in the U.S. Army, where | ||
he played in the band and the jazz orchestra; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following his return to civilian life, Mr. Olivares | ||
earned bachelor's and master's degrees in music at The University of | ||
Texas at Austin; he began his career in education at Lamar Junior | ||
High School in Laredo; seeking more opportunities to play live | ||
music, he moved back to Corpus Christi, accepting a teaching | ||
position at Sundeen Junior High; in 1967, he became band director at | ||
Moody High School, a post he held until 1975, and over the | ||
succeeding years, he worked as a counselor at Carroll High, King | ||
High, and Del Mar College before retiring in 1995; he also directed | ||
the Texas A&M University--Corpus Christi jazz ensemble from 2002 to | ||
2007; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Olivares gave generously of his time and talents | ||
to a number of music organizations, including the American | ||
Federation of Musicians Local 644 and the Corpus Christi Symphony | ||
Orchestra, Municipal Band, and Arts Council; moreover, he helped | ||
found the Texas Jazz Festival, served as choir director at Christ | ||
the King Church and St. Patrick Church, and started the jazz mass at | ||
Holy Cross Church; in recognition of his many accomplishments, he | ||
was inducted into the Texas Music Educators Association Region XIV | ||
Band Directors Hall of Fame and the Water Street Market South Texas | ||
Music Walk of Fame; and | ||
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Olivares enjoyed the love | ||
and support of his wife, Emilie; he was the proud father of four | ||
children, Edward, Paul, Mary, and Michael, and he also treasured | ||
the time he spent with his grandson, David; and | ||
WHEREAS, Although he is greatly missed, Eddie Olivares has | ||
left his family and friends with many cherished memories, and he | ||
will forever hold a special place in their hearts; now, therefore, | ||
be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory | ||
of Edward G. Olivares and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved | ||
ones and many friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Eddie | ||
Olivares. | ||
