WHEREAS, The citizens of Dallas have long benefited from the | ||
leadership and dedication of Pete Schenkel, who is being honored | ||
for his remarkable efforts in behalf of the city on April 7, 2011, | ||
with his receipt of the 82nd annual Linz Award; and | ||
WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Zale Corporation and The Dallas | ||
Morning News, the Linz Award is given to individuals whose | ||
humanitarian efforts and civic service have greatly aided the | ||
community and its residents, and Mr. Schenkel is most deserving of | ||
this honor; and | ||
WHEREAS, Pete Schenkel was born and raised in Dallas; he | ||
delivered the Morning News as a teen and helped his father run a | ||
dairy farm in the Wilmer-Hutchins area, and then worked his way up | ||
from a delivery position at a dairy to become an owner of the | ||
company; over the past five decades, Mr. Schenkel has become an | ||
iconic figure in the dairy industry and has played a pivotal role in | ||
the creation and success of Dean Foods; and | ||
WHEREAS, Through the years, Mr. Schenkel has given generously | ||
of his time and resources as a member of a number of important | ||
boards, including the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, the | ||
Methodist Health System Foundation, and the Dallas Blue Foundation, | ||
which provides financial assistance to families of Dallas police | ||
officers wounded or killed in the line of duty; since the 1980s, he | ||
has overseen a national program run by dairies that offers monetary | ||
rewards to help solve major crimes; moreover, he directs a | ||
charitable fund with his wife, Pat, and gave $4 million to the | ||
Methodist Health System Foundation in 2007, the largest gift in the | ||
institution's 80-plus-year history; and | ||
WHEREAS, In his role as the chair of the State Fair of Texas, | ||
Mr. Schenkel ensured that The University of Texas at Austin and the | ||
University of Oklahoma football teams would continue to play their | ||
annual rivalry game at the Cotton Bowl and not relocate to | ||
Arlington; he worked to get voters to approve much-needed | ||
renovations to the stadium and was instrumental in persuading the | ||
Longhorns and the Sooners to stay through 2015; and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of great success who has never forgotten his | ||
humble beginnings, Pete Schenkel has set an inspiring example of | ||
humanitarianism and civic engagement that will long resonate in the | ||
city he has helped shape; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Pete Schenkel on his receipt of the | ||
2011 Linz Award and honor him for his extraordinary service; and, be | ||
it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. Schenkel as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
