H.R. No. 1111

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Jack County Sheriff's Deputy Terry Mahan was honored
with a Star of Texas Award on September 11, 2018, at a ceremony in
Austin; and
WHEREAS, Established by the 78th Texas Legislature in 2003,
the Star of Texas Awards annually recognize first responders who
have been seriously injured or killed in the line of duty;
recipients are selected by three advisory committees appointed by
the governor; and
WHEREAS, On the morning of February 4, 2018, Deputy Mahan was
assisting with a minor vehicle accident at the intersection of
U.S. Highways 281 and 380; due to heavy fog and wet road conditions,
a motorist failed to notice the stop sign and lost control while
driving through the intersection, striking both Deputy Mahan and a
wrecker driver at a speed of approximately 50 miles per hour; Deputy
Mahan suffered critical injuries, including multiple fractures
requiring surgery, as well as a concussion; at the time of the
incident, he was in his first months of service with the Jack County
Sheriff's Office; and
WHEREAS, Texans owe an immense debt of gratitude to the men
and women of the law enforcement profession who willingly place
themselves in harm's way to protect and serve the public, and Deputy
Terry Mahan's courage and dedication make him truly deserving of
special commendation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas
Legislature hereby honor Deputy Terry Mahan on his receipt of a 2018
Star of Texas Award and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Mr. Mahan as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
