relating to a study regarding the placement of rumble strips on | ||
highway shoulders. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. For purposes of this Act: | ||
(1) "Department" means the Texas Department of | ||
Transportation. | ||
(2) "Highway" means a road, highway, farm-to-market | ||
road, or street under the supervision of the state or a political | ||
subdivision of the state. | ||
(3) "Rumble strips" means any rough-textured or | ||
slightly raised or depressed road surface intended to alert motor | ||
vehicle operators through noise and vibration. | ||
SECTION 2. (a) The department shall conduct a study that | ||
identifies and assesses the optimal placement of rumble strips | ||
along highway shoulders to permit use of the shoulders by farm | ||
equipment in a manner that: | ||
(1) does not impede the movement of traffic on the | ||
highway; and | ||
(2) maintains the functionality of the rumble strip | ||
as a safety feature for motor vehicle operators. | ||
(b) The department may collaborate with another state | ||
agency or a research division of an institution of higher education | ||
in this state to conduct the study. | ||
(c) Not later than December 1, 2025, the department shall | ||
prepare and submit to the legislature a written report containing | ||
the results of the study and any recommendations for legislative or | ||
other action. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act expires January 1, 2027. | ||
SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
