relating to a Texas water resources program component of the | ||
science curriculum used in public schools in certain grade levels. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by | ||
adding Subsection (bb) to read as follows: | ||
(bb) The State Board of Education, in consultation with the | ||
Texas Water Development Board, shall develop a Texas water | ||
resources program that a school district shall use in the | ||
district's eighth grade science curriculum. The program must: | ||
(1) address water conservation, including the | ||
importance of water conservation and water conservation | ||
strategies; | ||
(2) address innovative water projects; | ||
(3) address information regarding surface water, | ||
groundwater, and the water cycle; and | ||
(4) be sequenced and paced for one semester or term. | ||
SECTION 2. (a) Not later than May 1, 2018, the State Board | ||
of Education shall develop a Texas water resources program as | ||
provided by Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this | ||
Act. | ||
(b) A school district shall use the Texas water resources | ||
program developed by the State Board of Education as provided by | ||
Section 28.002(bb), Education Code, as added by this Act, beginning | ||
with the 2018-2019 school year. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
