A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE PASSING OF ALLEAN COLEMAN HAMMOND, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Allean Coleman Hammond on Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the venerable age of 101; and
Whereas, Allean was born on April 20, 1916 near Monetta, South Carolina; and
Whereas, Allean worked as a teacher in Aiken and Edgefield counties, before retiring in 1976; and
Whereas, she was married for thirty-seven years to Samuel Hammond, who died in 1981. Together, they had one daughter, the late Gloria Hammond-Lesane; and
Whereas, Allean was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church for over sixty years and served as pianist for many of those. In 2016, the church honored her as its oldest living member with a celebration called "Mrs. Allean Coleman Hammond Day." Always faithful, she attributed her longevity to God; and
Whereas, in her last years, Allean lived with her granddaughter Wildy on Marlboro Street in Aiken; and
Whereas, throughout her life, Allean was a great animal lover. In her spare time, she loved sketching pictures, painting, sewing, watching television, listening to music, playing Bingo and checkers, and eating sweets. She could do anything with her hands, from hanging wallpaper to edging her grass with a butcher knife; and
Whereas, Allean was known for her friendly, kind, and loving nature and was admired by all who knew her. She will be missed. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Allean Coleman Hammond, and extend their deepest sympathy to her family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Allean Coleman Hammond.
