A RESOLUTION

  

1

Congratulating pitcher Roy Halladay for receiving the 2010 Cy

2

Young Award and for his outstanding season with the

3

Philadelphia Phillies.

4

WHEREAS, Roy Halladay, former star pitcher for the Toronto

5

Blue Jays, began his playing career with the Philadelphia

6

Phillies on opening day of the 2010 season; and

7

WHEREAS, Halladay, a seven-time All-Star selection, pitched

8

the 20th perfect game in Major League Baseball history on May

9

29, 2010, against the Florida Marlins, retiring 27 batters,

10

including 11 strikeouts, no hits, no runs and no errors; and

11

WHEREAS, On October 6, 2010, in his first postseason

12

appearance, Halladay pitched a no-hitter against the Cincinnati

13

Reds in the first game of the National League Division series;

14

and

15

WHEREAS, With his October 6 game, Halladay became the first

16

pitcher since Nolan Ryan in 1973 to pitch two no-hitters in a

17

season; and

WHEREAS, On September 21, 2010, Halladay became the first

2

pitcher to win 20 games in a season since 1982, and one week

3

later he completed his 21st victory, helping the Phillies clinch

4

their fourth consecutive National League East title; and

5

WHEREAS, Halladay was unanimously chosen as the recipient of

6

the 2010 National League Cy Young Award, making him only the

7

fifth pitcher in history to win the award in both the National

8

League and the American League, having won the award for his

9

play with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2003; therefore be it

10

RESOLVED, That the Senate congratulate Roy Halladay for

11

receiving the 2010 Cy Young Award, for his outstanding season

12

with the Philadelphia Phillies and his contributions to the game

13

of baseball in this Commonwealth.
