| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the life of former Senator Charles D. Lemmond, Jr., and |
2 | extending condolences to his family. |
3 | WHEREAS, Former Senator Charles D. Lemmond, Jr., who served |
4 | the constituents of the 20th Senatorial District for more than |
5 | 20 years, died on Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at the age of 83; and |
6 | WHEREAS, Senator Lemmond was originally from Hazleton, and, |
7 | after he graduated from Forty Fort High School, he enlisted in |
8 | the United States Army of Occupation; and |
9 | WHEREAS, After earning his undergraduate degree from Harvard |
10 | University, Senator Lemmond went on to earn his law degree from |
11 | the University of Pennsylvania and married his beloved wife |
12 | Barbara not long after graduation; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Early in his legal career, Senator Lemmond focused |
14 | on public service when he began working as solicitor for |

1 | multiple municipalities, but he quickly shifted to being a top |
2 | assistant district attorney; and |
3 | WHEREAS, In 1980, he was selected to serve as the Orphans' |
4 | Court judge for the Court of Common Pleas of Luzerne County; and |
5 | WHEREAS, After being elected to serve as Senator for the 20th |
6 | Senatorial District in 1985, he continued to serve until he |
7 | retired in 2006; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Senator Lemmond's work as a prosecutor and judge |
9 | prepared him well for his work with the State Government |
10 | Committee, which he chaired, and the Judiciary Committee, for |
11 | which he was the vice chair; and |
12 | WHEREAS, One of the most important victories in his career, |
13 | to him, was a law that required that all newborns receive |
14 | hearing tests; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Even after his retirement from the Senate, Senator |
16 | Lemmond continued to be active in his community and worked on a |
17 | number of projects over the years; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Although Senator Lemmond had staunch Republican |
19 | beliefs, he could always be counted on for his calm, bipartisan |
20 | approach to major issues; and |
21 | WHEREAS, Senator Lemmond is survived by his beloved wife, |
22 | Barbara, their four children; Charles, Judy, John and David; his |
23 | brother, George, as well as four grandchildren and ten nieces |
24 | and nephews; and |
25 | WHEREAS, Senator Lemmond will always be remembered for not |
26 | only his bipartisanship, but also for his unceasing dedication |
27 | to public and community service; therefore be it |
28 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life of Senator Charles |
29 | D. Lemmond, Jr., express profound sorrow over the loss of this |
30 | outstanding public servant and extend heartfelt condolences to |
