A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of May 12 through 19, 2012, as "Armed

2

Forces Week" in Pennsylvania and encouraging the observance

3

of May 19, 2012, as "Armed Forces Day" in Pennsylvania.

4

WHEREAS, "Armed Forces Day," since it was established by

5

President Harry S. Truman in 1949, is celebrated annually on the

6

third Saturday of May as part of "Armed Forces Week," which runs

7

from the second Saturday to the third Sunday of the month; and

8

WHEREAS, With pride in our nation's military strength and

9

successes, we acknowledge the members of our Army, Navy, Air

10

Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and the

11

Reserves and the government civilians and family members

12

supporting them; and

13

WHEREAS, A large number of our armed forces are actively

14

engaged in the global war on terrorism; and

15

WHEREAS, Two hundred United States service members are now in

16

Iraq and 88,000 United States service members are in

Afghanistan, fighting the global war on terrorism; and

2

WHEREAS, Our nation relies on the National Guard and other

3

reserve component forces like never before in our history, with

4

about 25% of the deployed troop strength coming from the

5

National Guard and the Reserves; and

6

WHEREAS, More than 800,000 members of the Reserves and the

7

National Guard have been called to active duty for the conflict

8

against Iraq and Afghanistan since 2001; and

9

WHEREAS, This year's "Armed Forces Day" theme is "United in

10

Purpose, Steadfast in Service," and military units from all

11

branches stationed in Pennsylvania will be conducting an "Armed

12

Forces Day" program on May 15, 2012, on City Island in

13

Harrisburg; and

14

WHEREAS, It is the intent of the Senate to recognize the men

15

and women of our armed forces for their dedicated service to

16

this Commonwealth and our nation and commend them especially for

17

the outstanding performance of their duties in Iraq and

18

Afghanistan, in the global war on terrorism and in response to

19

natural disasters; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of May 12

21

through 19, 2012, as "Armed Forces Week" in Pennsylvania; and be

22

it further

23

RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage the citizens of this

24

Commonwealth to observe May 19, 2012, as "Armed Forces Day" in

25

Pennsylvania.
