A RESOLUTION

Supporting "National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" on February

2

7, 2011, in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, More than 2,000 organizations in more than 800

4

cities across the United States plan to participate in National

5

Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which will be observed on February

6

7th of this year; and

7

WHEREAS, The mission of "National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness

8

Day" is to build awareness, participation and support for HIV

9

prevention, care, testing and treatment among African Americans;

10

and

11

WHEREAS, The primary goal of "National Black HIV/AIDS

12

Awareness Day" is to motivate African Americans to get tested

13

and know their HIV status, get educated about the transmission

14

modes of HIV/AIDS, get involved in their local communities and

15

get treated if they are currently living with HIV or are newly

16

diagnosed; and

17

WHEREAS, "National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" is directed,

18

planned and organized by a working group of national

organizations in partnership with the Centers for Disease

2

Control and Prevention to mobilize communities and address

3

specific issues in regard to local epidemics and best practices

4

that are science based and will influence the course of HIV in

5

African-American communities across the United States; and

6

WHEREAS, Today, nearly seven in ten new AIDS cases occur

7

among African Americans; and

8

WHEREAS, African Americans make up just 13% of the nation's

9

population, yet more than half, or 55%, of all AIDS deaths occur

10

among African Americans; and

11

WHEREAS, "National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" is a

12

national call to increase awareness of the threat and impact of

13

HIV/AIDS on the African-American community; and

14

WHEREAS, It is fitting that the citizens of this Commonwealth

15

join with national and local groups and express strong support

16

for "National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day" and the initiatives

17

to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in African-American

18

communities and provide treatment and support services to those

19

living with HIV/AIDS; therefore be it

20

RESOLVED, That the Senate support "National Black HIV/AIDS

21

Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania on February 7, 2011, and urge all

22

citizens to strongly support this day and participate in events

23

planned to commemorate the occasion.
