A RESOLUTION

Observing the month of January 2012 as "Pennsylvania Thrift

2

Month," observing the week of January 17 through 23, 2012, as

3

"National Thrift Week" and calling on individuals, families

4

and government at all levels to exercise thrift and fiscal

5

responsibility.

WHEREAS, Annual "National Thrift Week" observances from 1916

7

through 1966 highlighted the value of hard work and fiscal

8

discipline and the cultivation of thrift as an American ideal;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, Communities nationwide first celebrated "National

11

Thrift Week" in 1916 with the opening of school savings accounts

12

for children and workplace savings programs; and

13

WHEREAS, The 1916 observance was launched on January 17, the

14

birthday anniversary of early American inventor, author,

15

printer, scientist, philanthropist, statesman and diplomat

16

Benjamin Franklin, who was recognized as the "American apostle

17

of thrift"; and

18

WHEREAS, "National Thrift Week" is no longer celebrated or

19

fully recognized; and

20

WHEREAS, The nation and many individuals and families are

facing difficult financial conditions today; and

2

WHEREAS, Recession, unemployment and widespread pay cuts have

3

spurred individuals and governments to reassess financial

4

practices; and

5

WHEREAS, Restoring and instilling thrift and fiscal

6

responsibility as guiding principles for individuals and

7

governments can aid our return to an era of sound financial

8

management and economic prosperity; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the Senate observe the month of January 2012

10

as "Pennsylvania Thrift Month," observe the week of January 17

11

through 23, 2012, as "National Thrift Week" and call on

12

individuals, families and government at all levels to exercise

13

thrift and fiscal responsibility.
