A RESOLUTION

 

Honoring the life of former Senator Donald O. Oesterling and
extending condolences to his family.

WHEREAS, Former Senator Donald O. Oesterling, who served the
constituents of the 21st Senatorial District from 1964 to 1972,
died on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at the age of 85; and

WHEREAS, Senator Oesterling was originally from Butler, and,
after he attended Butler public schools, he enlisted in the
United States Navy Reserves and served in the Atlantic Theater
during World War II; and

WHEREAS, After earning his undergraduate degree from Capitol
University, Senator Oesterling served as President of Regal
Products, Inc., as a radio commentator; and

WHEREAS, After being elected to serve as Senator for the 21st
Senatorial District in 1964, he continued to serve until 1972;

and

WHEREAS, Senator Oesterling served on the Elections and
Reapportionment Committee, which he chaired, the Forests and
Waters, Game and Fish Committee, for which he was the Vice
Chair, and as Majority Caucus Chairman; and

WHEREAS, Even after his service in the Senate, Senator
Oesterling continued to be active in his community and worked on
a number of projects over the years, including serving as State
President of the Pennsylvania Elks, exalted ruler of the Butler
Elks and as a member of the American Legion and Veterans of
Foreign Wars; and

WHEREAS, Senator Oesterling is survived by his beloved wife,
Ann, their three children, Dawn, Michael and Peter, his two
brothers, Samuel and Thomas, as well as five grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Senator Oesterling will always be remembered for his
unceasing dedication to public and community service; therefore
be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the life of Senator Donald O.
Oesterling, express profound sorrow over the loss of this public
servant and extend heartfelt condolences to his family.
