| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of May 2011 as "Melanoma and Skin Cancer |
2 | Detection and Prevention Month" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Most people do not realize that the skin is the |
4 | largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many |
5 | essential tasks, such as regulating body temperature, protecting |
6 | internal organs, providing sensation and supporting metabolic |
7 | functions; and |
8 | WHEREAS, The estimated total direct cost associated with the |
9 | treatment of melanoma in 2004 was $291 million; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Current estimates are that one in five Americans |
11 | will develop skin cancer in their lifetime; and |
12 | WHEREAS, More than 2 million new cases of skin cancer will be |
13 | diagnosed in the United States this year; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young |
15 | adults between 25 and 29 years of age and the second most common |
16 | form of cancer for adolescents and young adults between 15 and |

1 | 29 years of age; and |
2 | WHEREAS, The Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and |
3 | Prevention Month is a public education service designated to |
4 | promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other |
5 | skin cancers; therefore be it |
6 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of May 2011 as |
7 | "Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month" in |
8 | Pennsylvania. |
