A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the week of February 2 through 6, 2009, as "Teen

Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week" in

3

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, One in 11 young people reports being a victim of

5

physical dating abuse; and

6

WHEREAS, One in four young people reports verbal, physical,

7

emotional or sexual abuse each year; and

8

WHEREAS, One in five young people reports being a victim of

9

emotional abuse; and

10

WHEREAS, One in five high school girls has been physically or

11

sexually abused by a dating partner; and

12

WHEREAS, Seventy-two percent of eighth and ninth graders

13

reportedly "date," and by the time they are in high school, 54%

14

of students report dating abuse among their peers; and

15

WHEREAS, Eight percent of boys and 9% of girls have been to

16

an emergency room for an injury received from a dating partner;

17

and 

18

WHEREAS, Forty-one percent of young people who have been in a

19

relationship themselves have friends who have been called names,

put down, or insulted via cell phone, IM, and social networking

2

sites such as MySpace and Facebook; and

3

WHERESAS, Only 51% of young people claim to know the warning

4

signs of an abusive relationship; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of February 2

6

through 6, 2009, as "Teen Dating Violence Awareness and

7

Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania.
