| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the week of February 2 through 6, 2009, as "Teen |
2 | Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week" in |
3 | Pennsylvania. |
4 | WHEREAS, One in 11 young people reports being a victim of |
5 | physical dating abuse; and |
6 | WHEREAS, One in four young people reports verbal, physical, |
7 | emotional or sexual abuse each year; and |
8 | WHEREAS, One in five young people reports being a victim of |
9 | emotional abuse; and |
10 | WHEREAS, One in five high school girls has been physically or |
11 | sexually abused by a dating partner; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Seventy-two percent of eighth and ninth graders |
13 | reportedly "date," and by the time they are in high school, 54% |
14 | of students report dating abuse among their peers; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Eight percent of boys and 9% of girls have been to |
16 | an emergency room for an injury received from a dating partner; |
17 | and |
18 | WHEREAS, Forty-one percent of young people who have been in a |
19 | relationship themselves have friends who have been called names, |

1 | put down, or insulted via cell phone, IM, and social networking |
2 | sites such as MySpace and Facebook; and |
3 | WHERESAS, Only 51% of young people claim to know the warning |
4 | signs of an abusive relationship; therefore be it |
5 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the week of February 2 |
6 | through 6, 2009, as "Teen Dating Violence Awareness and |
7 | Prevention Week" in Pennsylvania. |
