A RESOLUTION

Congratulating the Department of Health for its efforts to

2

affirm the importance of folic acid in the diets of women of

3

childbearing age.

4

WHEREAS, Each year, 2,500 babies are born with neural tube

5

defects, and many additional pregnancies result in miscarriage

6

or stillbirth due to inadequate maternal folic acid levels; and

7

WHEREAS, At least half of these cases could be prevented if

8

women consumed the proper amount of folic acid during early

9

pregnancy; and

10

WHEREAS, The Institute of Medicine's Food and Nutrition

11

Board, the Spina Bifida Association and the March of Dimes have

12

recommended that women who might become pregnant should consume

13

400 micrograms of synthetic folic acid every day from a vitamin

14

or from fortified foods in addition to eating a healthy diet

15

rich in natural sources of folate; and

16

WHEREAS, Research suggests that consumption of multivitamins

17

containing folic acid may also help prevent cleft palate,

18

congenital heart defects, prematurity and low birth weight; and

WHEREAS, While public awareness is improving, many women

2

still do not know the benefits of regularly consuming folic

3

acid, and only one-third take a daily vitamin containing folic

4

acid; therefore be it

5

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the

6

Department of Health for its public education campaign on the

7

importance of folic acid in the diets of women of childbearing

8

age; and be it further

9

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives support the

10

efforts of the Department of Health regarding the benefits of

11

folic acid to the general public and health care providers so

12

that the incidence of preventable neural tube defects is

13

reduced.
