A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life and achievements of Manute Bol, Sudanese-born

2

former National Basketball Association shot-blocking

3

specialist noted for his advocacy and philanthropy in Africa,

4

who died June 19, 2010, at 47 years of age.

5

WHEREAS, Manute Bol was born in the village of Turalei in

6

southern Sudan, the son of a Dinka tribal chief; and

7

WHEREAS, Manute Bol attained distinction as the first African

8

to be drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA) and

9

the only player to compile more blocked shots than scored

10

points; and

11

WHEREAS, Manute Bol's height, 7 feet 7 inches, and endearing

12

personality were also distinguishing; and

13

WHEREAS, Drafted by the Washington Bullets in 1985, Manute

14

Bol was a record-setting rookie shot blocker; and

15

WHEREAS, Manute Bol went on to play for the Golden State

Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat until injury ended

2

his professional basketball career in 1995; and

3

WHEREAS, Humanitarian work became the focus of Manute Bol's

4

energies and resources in recent years; and

5

WHEREAS, Manute Bol visited Sudanese refugee camps and

6

contributed millions of dollars to relief efforts in his war-

7

torn homeland; and

8

WHEREAS, Manute Bol advised Sudan Sunrise, a humanitarian

9

organization based in Lenexa, Kansas; and

10

WHEREAS, Manute Bol's service to his native region included

11

school building construction projects in association with Sudan

12

Sunrise; and

13

WHEREAS, Manute Bol provided further humanitarian assistance

14

and aid for children's education through the Ring True

15

Foundation, a Christian relief organization he founded to

16

benefit Sudanese war-affected and displaced persons; and

17

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of

18

Pennsylvania pays tribute to Manute Bol's exceptional personal

19

commitment to rebuilding southern Sudan and improving the lives

20

of Sudanese refugees; therefore be it

21

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the

22

Commonwealth of Pennsylvania honor the life and achievements of

23

internationally known humanitarian and former NBA star Manute

24

Bol, who died June 19, 2010, at 47 years of age; and be it

25

further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to

27

the family of Manute Bol in care of Sudan Sunrise, 8643 Hauser
