| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging support of agencies dedicated to suicide prevention. |
2 | WHEREAS, The Surgeon General of the United States and |
3 | Congress of the United States recognize suicide as a national |
4 | problem and declare suicide prevention as a national priority, |
5 | encouraging the development of an effective strategy for the |
6 | prevention of suicide; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Suicide awareness campaigns alert professional, |
8 | community and lay groups about the common signs and symptoms |
9 | associated with suicidal behavior; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Better awareness that suicide is a serious public |
11 | health problem results in knowledge which increases support for |
12 | preventive interventions; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Increased awareness will help dispel myths about |
14 | suicide, and suicide prevention will result in a decrease in the |
15 | stigma of mental illness; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Volunteer agencies in this Commonwealth are |

1 | committed to reducing the number of suicides through education, |
2 | public awareness and support services to those contemplating |
3 | suicide; and |
4 | WHEREAS, An informed citizenry will lead to a change in |
5 | public policy with focus on the importance of investing in |
6 | suicide prevention efforts; therefore be it |
7 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives urge the |
8 | residents of this Commonwealth to support the volunteer agencies |
9 | that work to educate the public on the symptoms and risk factors |
10 | associated with suicide and to provide support services |
11 | dedicated to prevent suicides. |
