| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating July 18, 2011, and each July 18 thereafter as |
2 | "Nelson Mandela International Day" in Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela was born July 18, 1918, in Cape of |
4 | Good Hope, South Africa; and |
5 | WHEREAS, After years of exposure to the inhumanities of |
6 | apartheid, a system of legalized segregation policies enforced |
7 | by the ruling National Party, Nelson Mandela began working to |
8 | promote the advancement of human rights issues in South Africa; |
9 | and |
10 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela attended the University College of |
11 | Fort Hare and studied law at the University of Witwatersrand, |
12 | where he later earned a degree in law; and |
13 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress |
14 | in 1944, a liberation group that opposed the apartheid policies |
15 | enforced by the National Party; and |

1 | WHEREAS, In 1963, Nelson Mandela and others were found guilty |
2 | and charged with life in prison for sabotage, treason and |
3 | violent conspiracy against the government, in what is now known |
4 | as the Rivonia Trial; and |
5 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela was incarcerated from 1964 to 1988, |
6 | much of the time spent at the notorious Robben Island Prison, |
7 | located in Cape Town, South Africa; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela never surrendered his political |
9 | principles while in prison, and |
10 | WHEREAS, On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released |
11 | from prison under South Africa's President, F. W. de Klerk; and |
12 | WHEREAS, After 26 years locked in prison, Nelson Mandela |
13 | emerged to lead South Africa's transition from the division of |
14 | apartheid to an integrated, multiracial democracy; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in |
16 | December 1993 for laying the foundation for a new democratic |
17 | South Africa; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela became the first democratically |
19 | elected president of the African National Congress in 1994; and |
20 | WHEREAS, During his presidency, Nelson Mandela formed the |
21 | Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which investigated and |
22 | studied human rights violations, housing issues, educational |
23 | policies and economic development standards in South Africa; and |
24 | WHEREAS, In 1996, South Africa enacted its first democratic |
25 | constitution, which was overseen by Nelson Mandela; and |
26 | WHEREAS, Since retiring in 1999, Nelson Mandela continues to |
27 | actively pursue advancements in racial equality throughout South |
28 | Africa and the rest of the world; and |
29 | WHEREAS, Nelson Mandela's accomplishments have been |
30 | acknowledged by more than 100 awards, and he continues to |

1 | actively petition for renewed efforts to combat the growing AIDS |
2 | epidemic; and |
3 | WHEREAS, In 2009, the United States joined 192 other United |
4 | Nations member states in supporting the creation of "Nelson |
5 | Mandela International Day," and its first observance on July 18, |
6 | 2010, honored Nelson Mandela's extraordinary contributions and |
7 | lifelong commitment to justice and human dignity; therefore be |
8 | it |
9 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate July |
10 | 18, 2011, and each July 18 thereafter as "Nelson Mandela |
11 | International Day" in Pennsylvania in recognition of his |
12 | lifelong contribution to a culture of freedom and peace and call |
13 | upon the citizens of Pennsylvania to engage in some form of |
14 | service to others to make the world a better place, one small |
15 | step at a time, just as Nelson Mandela did. |
