A RESOLUTION

Designating October 11, 2012, as the "Day of the Girl" in

2

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Equality and universal access to education for every

4

girl and boy are among the United Nations' Millennium

5

Development Goals supported by 189 countries, including the

6

United States; and

7

WHEREAS, On December 19, 2011, the United Nations established

8

October 11, 2012, as the annual International Day of the Girl

9

Child, supported and cosponsored by the United States and 97

10

other countries; and

11

WHEREAS, The Day of the Girl campaign calls on communities

12

across the globe to recognize that girls worldwide face many

13

injustices, such as violence, gender stereotypes,

14

discrimination, lack of education, child labor, early marriage

15

and economic inequality; and

16

WHEREAS, The goal of the Day of the Girl campaign is to

commence an open dialog regarding the issues that many young

2

girls face and to empower them to fight for their rights and

3

equality; and

4

WHEREAS, Several groups throughout this Commonwealth,

5

including The Women and Girls Foundation of Southwest

6

Pennsylvania, iTwixie, Girl Scouts and the Girls Coalition of

7

Southwestern Pennsylvania are celebrating the first annual Day

8

of the Girl; and

9

WHEREAS, The House of Representatives supports increasing

10

girls' participation in sports, science and math-related

11

activities, increasing high school graduation rates and

12

providing equal opportunities for all girls by speaking out

13

against gender-based injustices, celebrating all girls'

14

potential and encouraging all girls to pursue their dreams;

15

therefore be it

16

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October

17

11, 2012, as the "Day of the Girl" in Pennsylvania.
