A RESOLUTION

Recognizing the importance of finding the cause and cure for

2

multiple sclerosis; expressing appreciation to the

3

Pennsylvania chapters of the National Multiple Sclerosis

4

Society for their work; and recognizing the week of March 14

5

through 20, 2011, as "Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week" in

6

Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis is a neurological disease of the

8

central nervous system, affecting an estimated 400,000

9

Americans, and nearly 200 new cases of multiple sclerosis are

10

being diagnosed each week nationwide; and

11

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania chapters of the National Multiple

12

Sclerosis Society (NMSS) report that in this Commonwealth more

13

than 19,000 people are affected by this devastating disease, the

14

fifth highest incident rate in the country; and

WHEREAS, Multiple sclerosis generally strikes young adults 20

2

through 50 years of age, attacking them in the prime of their

3

lives, and some of these young adults diagnosed with multiple

4

sclerosis experience tremendous suffering and pain, leading to

5

total paralysis in some cases, and the cause and cure for this

6

debilitating disease remain unknown; and

7

WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania chapters of the National Multiple

8

Sclerosis Society have been committed throughout the years to

9

heightening public knowledge and insight about this devastating

10

and crippling disease, and the chapters are currently planning

11

several major Statewide fundraisers and educational programs and

12

are providing direct services in order to raise awareness about

13

the effects of multiple sclerosis; and

14

WHEREAS, Finding the cause and developing a method of

15

prevention for multiple sclerosis is an important task that all

16

Pennsylvanians should support; therefore be it

17

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

18

importance of finding the cause and cure for multiple sclerosis,

19

a terribly perplexing and painful disease which affects hundreds

20

of thousands of Americans, including many Pennsylvanians; and be

21

it further

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives express its

23

appreciation and admiration for the major work that the National

24

Multiple Sclerosis Society has done over the years to heighten

25

the public's knowledge and insight about this debilitating

26

disease; and be it further

27

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize the

28

week of March 14 through 20, 2011, as "Multiple Sclerosis

29

Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania and encourage the citizens of

30

this great State to join in the fight to end this devastating
