A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of September 2012 as "Ovarian Cancer

2

Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Every woman is at risk for ovarian cancer regardless

4

of age, heritage or medical history; and

5

WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, a woman's

6

risk of being diagnosed with ovarian cancer during her lifetime

7

is 1 in 71; and

8

WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the ninth most common cancer among

9

women, and the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women;

10

and

11

WHEREAS, Approximately half of women with ovarian cancer are

60 years of age or older; and

2

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that there

3

will be approximately 22,280 new cases of ovarian cancer in the

4

United States in 2012 and that 15,500 women will die from

5

ovarian cancer in 2012; and

6

WHEREAS, Approximately one-fifth of ovarian cancers are found

7

at an early stage; and

8

WHEREAS, Early detection improves the chances of survival;

9

and

10

WHEREAS, Nine out of ten women treated for early ovarian

11

cancer will live longer than five years after the cancer is

12

found; and

13

WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer awareness and education is an

14

important factor in diagnosis and treatment; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

16

month of September 2012 as "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month" in

17

Pennsylvania.
