A RESOLUTION

Honoring all fire police officers for their dedication in

2

providing service to Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Fire police officers are dedicated volunteers

4

trained to provide assistance during emergencies and risk their

5

lives serving the people of this Commonwealth; and

6

WHEREAS, Fire police officers first started providing

7

assistance to their communities in the late 1800s; and

8

WHEREAS, Any individual registering as a fire police officer

9

must abide by an oath of office and be sworn in by a judge or

10

justice; and

11

WHEREAS, Fire police officers are certified in fire police

12

operations by the Commonwealth and/or the county in which they

13

volunteer; and

WHEREAS, The most important duty of a fire police officer is

2

to protect the emergency responders, victims, general public,

3

victims' property and the equipment of emergency responders; and

4

WHEREAS, Fire police officers are expected to regulate

5

traffic, offer detour routes, provide safe landing zones for

6

helicopters and ensure that emergency areas are clear for

7

firefighting; and

8

WHEREAS, The duties of fire police officers extend to

9

ensuring a safe entry and exit of emergency vehicles at an

10

emergency scene and assisting emergency responders in evacuating

11

individuals that may be in danger; and

12

WHEREAS, Fire police officers also provide assistance to fire

13

marshals by identifying possible arson suspects or containing

14

crime scenes; and

15

WHEREAS, Fire police officers are authorized to enforce

16

Federal and State laws and arrest any individuals violating such

17

laws, including, but not limited to, provisions pertaining to

18

fire department activities, firefighting techniques and

19

emergency vehicle operations; and

20

WHEREAS, The duties of fire police officers also extend to

21

controlling crowds and providing needed assistance to State or

22

local law enforcement officers at local events; and

23

WHEREAS, Fire police officers often serve as public relations

24

representatives for fire departments by sharing pertinent

25

information with the public and assuring individuals that the

26

firefighters are knowledgeable and able to carry out their

27

duties; and

28

WHEREAS, Fire police officers serve with bravery, honor and

29

compassion while offering comfort, solace and protection to

30

victims and their family members; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor fire police

2

officers for their dedication in helping preserve the safety and

3

well-being of the residents of Pennsylvania.
