A RESOLUTION

Honoring the life of Dorothy Irene Height, the godmother of

2

civil rights.

3

WHEREAS, Dorothy Height, who grew up in Rankin, Allegheny

4

County, passed away on April 20, 2010, at age 98; and

5

WHEREAS, She graduated from New York University with a

6

bachelor's degree and master's degree in educational psychology;

7

and

8

WHEREAS, Ms. Height was a leading civil rights pioneer whose

9

work spanned nearly 80 years; and

10

WHEREAS, Ms. Height's civil rights work began in 1933 when

11

she became a leader of the United Christian Youth Movement of

12

North America and fought to stop lynchings and worked to

13

desegregate the armed forces; and

14

WHEREAS, In 1938, she was one of ten young people selected to

15

help Eleanor Roosevelt plan a World Youth Conference and fought

for better working conditions for black domestic workers; and

2

WHEREAS, During her many years of leadership with the YWCA,

3

she worked to integrate YWCAs around the country, and today full

4

integration is so much the norm that it is difficult to remember

5

the time that it was not, thanks to her efforts; and

6

WHEREAS, She served as the tenth national president of Delta

7

Sigma Theta, a sisterhood of more than 200,000 predominantly

8

black college-educated women, from 1946 to 1957; and

9

WHEREAS, Ms. Height led the National Council of Negro Women

10

from 1957 to 1988, when she became the group's chair and

11

president emeritae; and

12

WHEREAS, Ms. Height was one of the few women, and sometimes

13

the only woman, to participate at the highest levels of the

14

civil rights movement and was on the platform when Dr. King

15

delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the 1963 March on

16

Washington; and

17

WHEREAS, An advisor to Presidents Roosevelt, Eisenhower and

18

Johnson, Ms. Height is the recipient of the Presidential

19

Citizens Medal, the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Freedom From Want

20

Award and the Presidential Medal of Freedom; and

21

WHEREAS, After a brief illness and hospitalization, Ms.

22

Height died on April 20, 2010, leaving an outstanding legacy of

23

accomplishments for women, for minorities and for all Americans

24

generally; therefore be it

25

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor the life of

26

Ms. Height by recognizing her lifetime achievements and her

27

dedicated service to her country, her Commonwealth and her

28

fellow citizens.
