A RESOLUTION
Designating October 24, 2009, as "United Nations Day" in
Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, The United Nations has a distinguished history of
rising above politics, religion and other divisive ideologies
which have been the source of war, hatred and inhumanity; and
WHEREAS, Sixty-four years ago the United Nations was formally
established on October 24, 1945, less than two months after the
end of World War II; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations was formed to end violence,
promote tolerance, advance development, ensure equality, protect
human rights and end poverty; and
WHEREAS, President Harry Truman was the first president to
issue a proclamation asking Americans to observe United Nations
Day; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations is an instrument through which
nations can identify common problems, set international
standards and take action; and
WHEREAS, Today the United Nations has 192 member states; and
WHEREAS, Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan
said during the 2006 United Nations Day celebrations that
recognizing this special day is energizing for individuals and
that they can "stop for a moment and realize how thrilling it is
to work alongside people from every corner of the world share
the goals of the Charter"; and
WHEREAS, H.E. Dr. Ali Abdussalan Treki was elected President
of the 64th session of the United Nations General Assembly on
June 10, 2009; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations has been successful in bringing
attention to hunger, poverty, human immunodeficiency virus and
AIDS, genocide, hate crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against
humanity; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations has expanded its issues to
include climate change as well as a global counter-terrorism
strategy; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate October
24, 2009, as "United Nations Day" in Pennsylvania.
