A RESOLUTION

Recognizing and designating October 2011 as "National Arts and

2

Humanities Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, "National Arts and Humanities Month" serves to

4

enlighten and enrich the lives of the citizens of our nation by

5

introducing them to the many novel and creative experiences,

6

cultures and ideas which are engendered through artful

7

expression; and

8

WHEREAS, In 1993, "National Arts and Humanities Month" was

9

spawned from the National Arts Week observation which originated

10

in 1985 and has since then evolved into a coast-to-coast

11

collective celebration of culture and edification; and

WHEREAS, Americans for the Arts, which is the nation's

2

leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts, has from

3

the outset been instrumental in coordinating and promoting the

4

efforts of "National Arts and Humanities Month" in the United

5

States; and

6

WHEREAS, Americans for the Arts' expansive network of arts

7

organizations, governmental agencies, business leaders,

8

educators and individual philanthropists has played a vital role

9

in providing the funding necessary to make "National Arts and

10

Humanities Month" the nation's largest annual celebration of the

11

arts and humanities; and

12

WHEREAS, During the month of October of every calendar year,

13

the highlight and focal point of "National Arts and Humanities

14

Month" is the American for the Arts' National Arts Awards event;

15

and

16

WHEREAS, This celebratory event formally provides

17

acknowledgment of 400 of our nation's top artists and serves as

18

a medium for philanthropists and corporate leaders to recognize

19

the achievements of those who have exhibited great leadership

20

and advocacy in the realm of the arts; and

21

WHEREAS, On October 4, 2011, President Barack Obama issued a

22

presidential proclamation declaring October 2011 as "National

23

Arts and Humanities Month"; and

24

WHEREAS, The importance of observing this celebration is

25

underscored by the annual proclamations issued by the White

26

House, the United States Conference of Mayors, as well as

27

countless other states and municipalities across the country;

28

and

29

WHEREAS, The main objective of "National Arts and Humanities

30

Month" is to enlighten the populace by heightening their

awareness of the innumerable cultural gems that surround them;

2

and

WHEREAS, Americans for the Arts encourages everyone to

4

celebrate and recognize "National Arts and Humanities Month"

5

simply by taking in a stage play, attending a local art

6

gallery's open house, contacting one's legislator to request

7

increased arts funding or any other positive form of artistic

8

expression; therefore be it

9

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives formally

10

designate October 2011 as "National Arts and Humanities Month"

11

in Pennsylvania.
