INTRODUCED AS NONCONTROVERSIAL RESOLUTION UNDER RULE 35, JUNE 23, 2009
A RESOLUTION
Commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Borough of Dushore.
WHEREAS, The Borough of Dushore was incorporated in 1859 and
is located in the northeastern portion of scenic Sullivan
County; and
WHEREAS, A French immigrant named Aristide Aubert Dupetite
Thouars moved into the area in the spring of 1794 and was given
400 acres of land at what is now Dushore, which he cleared,
farmed and inhabited during the next three years; and
WHEREAS, A veteran of the French Navy, Mr. Thouars returned
to France in 1797 and was given command of an 80-gun warship;
and
WHEREAS, In a naval battle with the famous British Admiral
Nelson, Mr. Thouars was killed in 1798 at 38 years of age; and
WHEREAS, Soon thereafter, other settlers began to move into
the Dushore area and created a small community of merchants to
serve the surrounding countryside; and
WHEREAS, At the last decennial census, in 2000, Dushore's
population numbered 663; and
WHEREAS, Although Dushore is the largest borough in the
county, high school students who live in Dushore are transported
to Laporte to attend the county's only junior-senior high
school, Sullivan County Jr.-Sr. High School, indicating
Dushore's remoteness from this Commonwealth's more populated
areas; and
WHEREAS, It is this very remoteness that draws tourists,
campers and sportsmen to the Dushore area where they always find
nature at its best and a warm welcome from residents; and
WHEREAS, Dushore has played a significant role in this
Commonwealth's rich history and looks forward to celebrating the
150th anniversary of its founding as a borough; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives commemorate the
150th anniversary of the Borough of Dushore.
