A RESOLUTION
Congratulating the Villanova University Wildcats Men's
Basketball Team for winning the East Regional Bracket of the
2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Division
I Basketball Championship, thereby earning a berth in the
Final Four round of play.
WHEREAS, The Villanova University Wildcats Men's Basketball
Team set a school record by winning 25 regular season games and
only suffering six defeats; and
WHEREAS, The team compiled a remarkable 13-5 Big East record
in what most college basketball analysts recognized as the most
competitive conference in the nation; and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats qualified for the 65-team field of the
2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men's
Division I Basketball Championship tournament as the number
three seed in the East Regional Bracket; and
WHEREAS, The team showed its resiliency by never quitting
despite falling 14 points behind the impressive American
University Eagles squad before pulling away for an 80-67 victory
in the first round of the tournament; and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats advanced to the Sweet Sixteen by
handily defeating the formidable UCLA Bruins by a score of 89-69
in the second round of the tournament; and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats' victory over the legendary Duke
University Blue Devils team was never in doubt as the Wildcats
cruised to a 77-54 win; and
WHEREAS, Junior point guard, Scottie Reynolds, delivered the
decisive lay-up with one-half second remaining in the game to
knock off the top-seeded University of Pittsburgh Panthers in a
contest that instantly became a classic in college basketball
history; and
WHEREAS, The 78-76 victory over the University of Pittsburgh,
another of this Commonwealth's fine institutions of higher
education, on March 28, 2009, secured the Wildcats a spot in the
2009 Final Four as champions of the East Regional Bracket; and
WHEREAS, The team, led by coach Jay Wright and his capable
cadre of assistants and trainers, consisted of seniors Dwayne
Anderson, Shane Clark, Dante Cunningham and Frank Tchuisi,
juniors Jason Colenda, Reggie Redding, Scottie Reynolds and
Russell Wooten, sophomores Corey Fisher and Corey Stokes, red-
shirt sophomore Antonio Pena, freshman Maurice Sutton and red-
shirt freshman Taylor King; and
WHEREAS, These 13 young men and their coaches have, by their
dedicated work ethic and impressive on-court performance,
enhanced the rich and proud tradition of Villanova basketball,

which includes the miraculous 1985 national championship season;
and
WHEREAS, The Wildcats will continue in their pursuit of a
second national championship by taking on another renowned
basketball program when they play the University of North
Carolina Tar Heels in Detroit, Michigan, on April 4, 2009; and
WHEREAS, The accomplishments of this team, both as athletes
and as students, should be honored, and young men and women
across this Commonwealth should seek to emulate the success of
the Wildcats; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives congratulate the
Villanova University Wildcats Men's Basketball Team for winning
the East Regional Bracket of the 2009 National Collegiate
Athletic Association Men's Division I Basketball Championship
and joining three of the most storied basketball programs in the
country in the 2009 Final Four.
