| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating the month of April 2009 as "Pennsylvania One Call |
2 | System Safe Digging Month" to encourage all excavators and |
3 | homeowners of this Commonwealth to dial 8-1-1 or |
4 | 1-800-242-1776 before digging. |
5 | WHEREAS, As engineers, designers, excavators and homeowners |
6 | work to keep pace with the Commonwealth's unprecedented economic |
7 | development, it is important to minimize damage to underground |
8 | utility lines, danger to workers and environmental pollution and |
9 | loss of utility service to Pennsylvania citizens; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Pennsylvania One Call System, a utility service |
11 | information center celebrating more than 37 years of continuous |
12 | service to this Commonwealth, is key to preventing injuries and |
13 | damage when excavating; and |
14 | WHEREAS, This unique service provides easy, one-call |
15 | notification about construction and excavation projects which |
16 | may endanger workers and jeopardize utility lines while |
17 | promoting workplace and public safety, reducing underground |

1 | utility damage, minimizing utility service interruptions and |
2 | protecting the environment; and |
3 | WHEREAS, This vital service, which began with only six |
4 | utility companies in western Pennsylvania and the City of |
5 | Pittsburgh, now serves more than 100,000 excavators and 3,300 |
6 | critical infrastructure owners throughout this Commonwealth; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Each year the Pennsylvania One Call System receives |
8 | more than 750,000 notification requests and transmits more than |
9 | six million notifications, providing protection to utility |
10 | companies, their employees and customers; therefore be it |
11 | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the |
12 | month of April 2009 as "Pennsylvania One Call System Safe |
13 | Digging Month" to encourage all excavators and homeowners of |
14 | this Commonwealth to dial 8-1-1 or 1-800-242-1776 before digging |
15 | in order to "Know What's Below," avoid injury, protect the |
16 | environment, prevent millions of dollars in damages and remind |
17 | excavators that three business days' notice is the law, for safe |
18 | digging is no accident, and more information may be obtained by |
