A RESOLUTION

Designating the week of November 7 through 13, 2010, as "Animal

2

Shelter Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.

WHEREAS, There are more than 73 million cats and 68 million

4

dogs living in more than 63 million households across the United

5

States, and thousands are living in Pennsylvania; and

6

WHEREAS, The irresponsibility of some pet owners has resulted

7

in animals running loose and unsupervised, causing a threat to

8

public health and safety; and

9

WHEREAS, Indiscriminate breeding allowed by irresponsible pet

10

owners who have not had their companion animals spayed or

11

neutered has contributed to pet overpopulation; and

12

WHEREAS, Animal shelter employees and volunteers respond to

13

these community problems and crises; and

14

WHEREAS, Animal shelters act as safe havens for homeless and

15

abused animals, providing them with comfort and care; and

WHEREAS, Shelters help both animals and people by returning

2

lost pets to their owners, enforcing animal laws, rescuing

3

injured animals, educating the public and matching families with

4

new animal companions; and

5

WHEREAS, The work of animal shelters and the important

6

services they provide often go unnoticed and underappreciated by

7

the citizens; therefore be it

8

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

9

week of November 7 through 13, 2010, as "Animal Shelter

10

Appreciation Week" in Pennsylvania.
