  Senator GIROD, Representative BERGER (Presession filed.)

  Whereas good fortune smiled upon Salem when Dr. William C.  '
Bud' Pierce and his wife, Dr. Selma Pierce, chose Salem as their
home over 13 years ago; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce received his medical degree from the
University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine
and a Ph.D. in Experimental Pathology from the UCLA Center for
the Health Sciences; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce is a partner at Hematology Oncology of
Salem, a member of the Salem Cancer Institute, the Salem Hospital
medical staff and the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU)
Knight Cancer Institute and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at
OHSU; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce serves on the Board of Directors of the
Salem Hospital Foundation, is past President and a current member
of the Board of Directors of the Marion-Polk County Medical
Society, is President of the Medical Foundation of Marion & Polk
Counties and is a delegate to the Oregon Medical Association; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce is a compassionate human being whose
patients appreciate his medical expertise in oncology combined
with his empathy and kindness; and
  Whereas Dr. Selma Pierce, a Doctor of Dental Medicine, is a
volunteer dentist with a Mobile Dental van, a program run by
Medical Teams International; and
  Whereas Dr. Selma Pierce works with the Medical Foundation of
Marion & Polk Counties' MedAssist program, which provides
prescription services for low-income people; and
  Whereas Dr. Selma Pierce is a member of the Assistance League
of Salem, an organization that is devoted to helping needy
children, for which Dr. Pierce has a passion; and
  Whereas in addition to her work as a dentist, Dr. Selma Pierce
provides her husband with incredible support and strength for his
demanding work with cancer patients; and
  Whereas when it was uncertain whether the Salvation Army Ray &
Joan Kroc Corps Community Center would actually come to fruition,
Drs. Bud and Selma Pierce stepped forward together, without
prompting, to offer the first major gift of the impending
campaign; and
  Whereas Drs. Bud and Selma Pierce's faith in the Kroc Center
was a spark that provided the impetus to move forward on this
amazing venture for the citizens of Salem and beyond; and
  Whereas not only have Drs. Bud and Selma Pierce been
financially generous to the Kroc Center, but they have also
contributed to the Community Health Education Center at Salem
Hospital, Blanchet Catholic School, the Medical Foundation of
Marion & Polk Counties Speaker Series in support of the MedAssist
program, the OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, the Salem Chamber
Orchestra, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life and the
World Beat Festival; and

  Whereas in recent years the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes have hosted
an annual Cancer Awareness Weekend with a concert and fireworks
display, and Dr. Bud Pierce quietly purchased 3,000 tickets for
cancer patients and cancer survivors and their families to enable
them to attend and enjoy the celebration; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce has received numerous awards throughout
his educational and professional careers, of which one award that
stands out is the UCLA School of Nursing Outstanding Physician
Award given to him in 1994; and
  Whereas the award alone speaks volumes for both the respect
given Dr. Bud Pierce by his colleagues and the kind of man and
doctor that he is; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce is a veteran of the United States Marine
Corps who attained an Honorable Discharge in 1985; and
  Whereas Dr. Bud Pierce then served in the United States Naval
Reserve Medical Corps from 1989 to 1997; and
  Whereas Drs. Bud and Selma Pierce are active members of the
First Christian Church of Salem, where Dr. Bud Pierce serves as
an elder and chairs the stewardship committee; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:

  That we, the members of the Seventy-sixth Legislative Assembly,
congratulate and honor Dr. Bud Pierce and his wife, Dr.  Selma
Pierce, for their outstanding achievements and generous service
to the Salem community.
