                             SUMMARY

brief statement of the essential features of the measure as
introduced.

  In memoriam: Mario Pastega, 1916-2012.

                      CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
  Whereas Mario Pastega was a prominent business and
philanthropic leader in the Willamette Valley; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega graduated from high school at the age of
16 and went on to earn a degree at the Armstrong School of
Business in Berkeley, California; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega married his best friend and partner, Alma
Solari, in 1938, and together they raised five children; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega served in the United States Navy during
World War II; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega came to Oregon in 1948 to purchase an
interest in a Pepsi-Cola bottling plant in Klamath Falls and
moved to Corvallis in 1961 to purchase and operate another
Pepsi-Cola bottling plant; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega was a visionary leader in the soft drink
industry, serving as president of the Oregon Soft Drink
Association; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega was inducted into the Beverage World Hall
of Fame in 2002; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega leveraged his success in business to the
benefit of his community, volunteered as a driver for Meals on
Wheels, served on the board of directors of numerous nonprofit
organizations and donated to many causes, particularly in
education and health care; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega recognized the value of education
professionals and established the Mario and Alma Pastega Golden
Apple Award to celebrate excellence in service within the
Corvallis School District; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega supported scholarships at Oregon State
University, Linn-Benton Community College and Western Oregon
University; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega's leadership led to successful
fundraising efforts for the Good Samaritan Regional Cancer Center
in Corvallis, the renovation of the Good Samaritan Regional
Medical Center intensive care unit and outpatient surgery center
and the Ralph Hull Regional Heart Center; and
  Whereas Mario and Alma Pastega, as the primary benefactors to
establish the Mario Pastega House at the Good Samaritan Regional
Medical Center, offered comfort and hospitality to Oregonians and
their families facing serious illness; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega's friendly spirit led him to visit the
Mario Pastega House each day in order to greet guests and
personally check on their comfort; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega was recognized with the Oregon
Philanthropy Award, the Corvallis Senior First Citizen award and
the Oregon Ethics in Business Award; and
  Whereas each holiday season, Mario and Alma Pastega brought joy
to adults and children through the annual free glittering display
of lights, animation, music and hand-painted characters at the
Pepsi-Cola plant; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega made Corvallis a better place to live
through his lifelong ethics of working hard, serving others and
loving life; and
  Whereas Mario Pastega passed away on January 20, 2012; now,
therefore,
Be It Resolved by the Legislative Assembly of the State of
  Oregon:
  That we, the members of the Seventy-seventh Legislative
Assembly, express our gratitude to Mario Pastega for a life
generously lived, and offer our sympathies and condolences to his
family; and be it further
  Resolved, That a copy of this resolution be presented to the
family of Mario and Alma Pastega in recognition of their
immeasurable contributions to this state.
