A RESOLUTION
Honoring the Annie Oakley Festival on its Fiftieth Anniversary.

WHEREAS,  The members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio are pleased to extend special recognition to the Annie Oakley Festival on the auspicious occasion of its Fiftieth Anniversary; and

WHEREAS,  Born in Darke County in 1860 as Phoebe Ann Oakley Mozee, Annie Oakley endured and overcame several hardships in her childhood, learning how to support her family by becoming proficient with every firearm that she could obtain, and by the time she was sixteen years old, she was a master marksman. She entered and won a shooting contest that would shape the course of her life, becoming a pioneer for women in the entertainment industry when she joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, where she was the star attraction for more than seventeen years; and

WHEREAS,  For the past half century, the citizens of Darke County have gathered annually to enjoy such diverse and exciting activities as shooting contests, a fast draw competition, visits to Annie Oakley's gravesite, historical tours, melodramas, displays at Garst Museum, a parade, and a car show, occurrences that are unique to the Annie Oakley Festival. The friendliness and neighborly atmosphere of this event have certainly distinguished it as one of Ohio's finest summer celebrations; and

WHEREAS,  Over the years, Darke County has benefited from a generous and civic-minded population, and the many individuals who have worked so diligently to ensure the success of the Annie Oakley Festival have displayed a commendable spirit of cooperation and commitment. The optimism and determination found among the area's citizens are truly deserving of high praise, and the festival provides them with a special opportunity to further demonstrate their local pride; therefore be it

RESOLVED,  That we, the members of the House of Representatives of the 130th General Assembly of Ohio, in adopting this Resolution, congratulate the Annie Oakley Festival on its Fiftieth Anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED,  That the Clerk of the House of Representatives transmit a duly authenticated copy of this Resolution to Darke County.
