S T A T E O F N E W Y O R K ________________________________________________________________________ 2128 2011-2012 Regular Sessions I N S E N A T E January 18, 2011 ___________ Introduced by Sen. KRUGER -- read twice and ordered printed, and when printed to be committed to the Committee on Elections AN ACT to amend the election law, in relation to Russian translators at certain polling sites in the city of New York THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, REPRESENTED IN SENATE AND ASSEM- BLY, DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: 1 Section 1. Section 8-104 of the election law is amended by adding a 2 new subdivision 7 to read as follows: 3 7. IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK, DURING DAYS OF PRIMARY, GENERAL AND 4 SPECIAL ELECTIONS, AT EACH PREMISES WHEREIN A POLLING PLACE OR PLACES 5 ARE LOCATED IN A POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THE STATE WHERE MORE THAN FIVE 6 PERCENT OF THE CITIZENS OF VOTING AGE OF SUCH POLITICAL SUBDIVISION 7 SPEAK THE RUSSIAN LANGUAGE AND ARE LIMITED-ENGLISH PROFICIENT, AT LEAST 8 ONE RUSSIAN-ENGLISH LANGUAGE TRANSLATOR DESIGNATED BY SUCH CITY SHALL BE 9 ASSIGNED FOR DUTY FROM THE OPENING UNTIL THE CLOSING OF THE POLLS. 10 S 2. This act shall take effect on the sixtieth day after it shall 11 have become a law; provided, that, effective immediately, the addition, 12 amendment and/or repeal of any rule or regulation necessary for the 13 implementation of this act on its effective date are authorized and 14 directed to be made and completed on or before such effective date.
