Senate Resolution No. 2773 BY: Senator LITTLE COMMEMORATING the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, and celebrating its legacy, past, present and future WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commemorate those sporting events of historical significance which add strength, vigor and inspiration to the quality of life in the communities of the State of New York; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, and to celebrate its legacy, past, present and future; and WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion will be observed with a myriad of events, such as a torch run and cauldron lighting, 1980s trivia games, and themed parties, from February 13-23, 2020, recalling the Games which have long been remembered for the heroics of the United States men's Olympic hockey team's improbable win over the Russians, known as the "Miracle on Ice"; speed skater Eric Heiden's five gold medals, in world or Olympic record time; the Opening Ceremony; and the United States figure skating team, dubbed the "Dream Team"; and WHEREAS, Created by local groups such as the Lake Placid Business Association, ORDA, ROOST, NYSEF, and other community members, the entire village of Lake Placid, including the Olympic venues, will be on full display during this community-wide celebration and more than 20 Olympians will participate in events available to the public; and WHEREAS, Lake Placid is one of only three cities world-wide to have hosted two Olympic Winter Games, 1932 and 1980; since then, it has played host to annual World Cup events and other large-scale sporting competitions; and WHEREAS, This important legacy and its continuation has spurred investment in the Olympic venues, further solidifying its place in history as the Winter Sports Capital and to continue to nurture and develop the Olympic dreams of future generations; and WHEREAS, It also gives Lake Placid the opportunity to welcome large, international events like the Winter World University Games and other international sports competitions, which truly enhance the community; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those sporting events which enhance the well-being and vitality of its community and have shown a long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics, and to celebrate its legacy, past, present and future; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Lake Placid Olympic Anniversary Organizing Committee.
