Senate Resolution No. 2531 BY: Senator MARTINS LESLISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Harvey R. Manes, M.D. upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition at Going All City: The Museum Ball by the Nassau County Museum of Art on June 8, 2024 WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those illustrious organizations and individuals within the State of New York whose focus and intent have made substantial impact on the quality of life in their communities; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Harvey R. Manes, M.D. upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition at Going All City: The Museum Ball on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn, New York; and WHEREAS, A patron of the arts, Harvey Manes is a life-long philanthropist, educator, and author who has been a passionate collector of art for more than 40 years; he currently serves as a Trustee of the Nassau County Museum of Art and its Exhibition and Acquisition Committee; and WHEREAS, Supporting a myriad of museums, Harvey Manes has lent works from his collection to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Heckscher Museum, NCMA, Jewish Museum in New York City, and many others; through his generosity, NCMA's Manes Center for Art and Education was completely renovated and is now a dynamic and inspiring learning environment; and WHEREAS, Harvey Manes is the founder of the Manes Peace Prize Foundation, supporting many individuals and organizations that promote peace through art and education; the Foundation recently has provided 30 awards to Nassau County public high school art, facilitated a juried art competition exhibited in the Manes Center, and contributed to the Manes Studio Theater in Lindenhurst and the Manes Art Center in Westhampton Beach; and WHEREAS, Pursuing his education, Harvey Manes received his M.D. from Downstate Medical School and completed his residency at Kings County Hospital at Downstate Medical Center; and WHEREAS, Beginning his medical career, Dr. Harvey Manes was a clinical instructor of orthopedic surgery for more than 20 years; establishing a great reputation, he taught surgery to numerous resident physicians at Nassau County University Hospital; and WHEREAS, A pioneer in joint replacement surgery, Dr. Harvey Manes has served as a team physician at both the University and High School levels; and WHEREAS, Furthering his education and expanding his horizons, Dr. Harvey Manes earned his J.D. from Hofstra University School of Law, where he also won the Entertainment Arts and Sports Law Society's writing competition with his dissertation on "The Law Regarding Fine Art Theft and Fraud"; and WHEREAS, A prolific writer, Dr. Harvey Manes has authored several books, including The Nobel Peace Prize and How it Has Failed Us and Collecting Art: For Pleasure and Profit; and WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his four children and five grandchildren, whom have all felt privileged to be a part of his life and rejoices in his achievements; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Harvey R. Manes, M.D. upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition at Going All City: The Museum Ball by the Nassau County Museum of Art on June 8, 2024; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Harvey R. Manes, M.D.
