Senate Resolution No. 2273 BY: Senator TEDISCO HONORING Casper Wells upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame on September 19, 2022 WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and WHEREAS, Athletic competition enhances the moral and physical development of the young people of this State, preparing them for the future by instilling in them the value of teamwork, encouraging a standard of healthy living, imparting a desire for success and developing a sense of fair play and competition; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to those outstanding athletes who inspired and brought pride to their school and community by achieving outstanding success in competition, attaining unprecedented success and the highest level of personal achievement; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Casper Wells upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame at its 2022 Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame & Reunion Dinner on Monday, September 19, 2022, at the Event Center at Rivers Casino & Resort, Schenectady, New York; and WHEREAS, Casper Wells played on three consecutive Big Ten Conference championship baseball teams at Schenectady High School, which included the 2000 team that boasted an undefeated record in the Big Ten; and WHEREAS, Casper Wells was an outstanding pitcher capturing the 2002 Troy Record's Player of the Year and a 2002 All-State selection compiling an outstanding 11-1 record on the 2002 Schenectady team that won the Sectional and Regional titles, and advanced to the NYSPHSAA final game; and WHEREAS, During the 2002 campaign, Casper Wells was the winning pitcher in five post-season games, including the State semi-final; and WHEREAS, Following his high school career, Casper Wells had a very successful collegiate baseball career at Towson University, where he had a 6-0 pitching record as a junior, while batting .351 with 28 home runs and 115 RBIs during his collegiate career winning the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association Outstanding Player of the Year Award and a two-time All-CAA selection; and WHEREAS, This exceptional athlete was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 2005 (14th round), and played for five Major League teams (Tigers, Mariners, A's, White Sox and Phillies) batting .230, with 25 home runs and 81 RBIs during his Major League Baseball career; and WHEREAS, Casper Wells' professional career included a four-game home run streak with the Mariners in 2011, pitching in two MLB games, and 21 career outfield assists; and WHEREAS, The individual accolades of Casper Wells, along with his commitment to team success have merited him a well-deserved distinction as a member of the Capital District/ NYS Baseball Hall of Fame; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Casper Wells upon the occasion of his induction into the Schenectady City School District Athletic Hall of Fame on September 19, 2022; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Casper Wells.
