Senate Resolution No. 1700 BY: Senator GRIFFO HONORING Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon upon the occasion of his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge outstanding professionals in the boxing industry who distinguished themselves through their exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest level of personal achievement; Ivan Calderon is one such individual and his life of achievements inspired others and contributed to the respect and admiration of the sport of boxing; and WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon upon the occasion of his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum; he will be honored within the Modern category of boxers at the 35th Anniversary celebration from June 6-9, 2024, in Canastota, New York; and WHEREAS, Born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, Ivan Calderon began boxing after moving to New York and authored an impressive 110-20 career that includes victories over Brian Viloria and Miguel Cotto, a 1995 New York Golden Gloves title, medaling at the Pan-American and Central American Games, and representing Puerto Rico at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games; and WHEREAS, The five-foot southpaw turned pro in 2001, and, in just his 16th pro bout, won the WBO minimumweight (105-pound) title with a 9th round TKO over Eduardo Ray Marquez; and WHEREAS, Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon registered 12 successful defenses of the strap with wins over such pugilists as Alex Sanchez (W 12), Daniel Reyes (W 12) and Miguel Tellez (TKO 9) before moving up in weight to win the WBO light flyweight title with a 12-round split decision over Hugo Fidel Cazares in 2007; and WHEREAS, A string of six defenses followed including victories over Nelson Dieppa (W 12), Cazares (TKO 7), Rodel Mayol (TKO 7) and Jesus Iribe (W 12); and WHEREAS, Ivan Calderon lost the belt to WBA champion Giovani Segura in 2010 (KO by 8); following a rematch loss to Segura (KO by 3), "Iron Boy" boxed twice more - a 10-split decision win for the WBO Latino minimumweight belt and a 5th round TKO loss for the WBO minimumweight title before hanging up the gloves in 2012 with a record of 35-3-1 (6 KOs); in retirement, the deft ring technician trained amateur boxers in Guaynabo; and WHEREAS, Ivan Calderon clearly contributed to the spirit of excellence which is a tradition of the International Boxing Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individuals of such outstanding accomplishments are brought to our attention, they should be recognized by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to honor Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon upon the occasion of his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame and Museum; and be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Ivan Calderon.
