        CONGRATULATING  Olive  Isabella  Walford  upon the
        occasion of celebrating her 109th Birthday

  WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and  knowledge
to  the  increasingly  active  roles they play in today's society; their
past contributions and future participation are a  vital  part  of,  and
valuable asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and

  WHEREAS,  Olive  Isabella  Walford  was born on May 14, 1910, in the
parish of St. Ann on her native island of Jamaica; due to tradition, her
family celebrates her birthday on April 16th each year; and

  WHEREAS, In the late 1970s, Olive I. Walford migrated to the  United
States  and  currently  resides  in Rosedale, Queens, with her daughter,
Dorothy; and

  WHEREAS, Olive I. Walford, with her zest for life, has inspired  and
enhanced  the  lives  of  her family and friends; she loves to dance and
regularly enjoys some of her favorite traditional Jamaican  dishes  such
as jerk chicken, escovitch fish, cow foot and shrimp; and

  WHEREAS,  This  distinguished  woman  has experienced the incredible
joys and sorrows characteristic of  and  reserved  for  those  with  the
stamina and courage to savor a full life; and

  WHEREAS,  Olive  I.  Walford  survives her husband, as well as three
siblings; today, she is the proud  mother  of  five  children,  and  the
loving  grandmother of 13 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five
great-great grandchildren; and

  WHEREAS, Affectionately known as Miss Olive, Olive I. Walford spends
most of her days sitting by the window, overlooking  the  activities  on
the street below; and

  WHEREAS,  The  eldest  living  parishioner  of St. David's Episcopal
Church, Olive I. Walford reads her bible and  enjoys  singing  religious
hymns daily, including her favorite, "Steel Away"; and

  WHEREAS,  This  beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around
her through her joyous and sincere  love  for  others  and  through  the
quiescent  charm  and  wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years;
and

  WHEREAS, It is the intent  of  this  Legislative  Body  to  publicly
recognize  those  who  have  reached  such a remarkable age and who have
witnessed and celebrated  the  innovations,  cultural  developments  and
awesome  achievements  of  this  country  during the last century, while
themselves contributing to the  growth  and  excellence  of  this  great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it

  RESOLVED,  That  this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Olive Isabella Walford  upon  the  occasion  of  her  109th
Birthday; and be it further


  RESOLVED,  That  a  copy  of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Olive Isabella Walford.
