STATE OF NEW YORK ________________________________________________________________________ 8578 IN ASSEMBLY January 12, 2024 ___________ Introduced by M. of A. RAJKUMAR -- read once and referred to the Commit- tee on Corporations, Authorities and Commissions AN ACT to amend the public authorities law, in relation to a reduced fare program in the metropolitan transportation authority for veterans who are students The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Section 1266 of the public authorities law is amended by 2 adding a new subdivision 20 to read as follows: 3 20. Notwithstanding any other provision of law or the terms of any 4 contract, the authority in consultation with the New York city transit 5 authority, the Long Island rail road and the Metro-North commuter rail- 6 road company shall establish and implement a half fare rate program for 7 transportation on New York city transit authority systems for veterans 8 who are full-time or part-time undergraduate, graduate or vocational 9 students attending an accredited college or university or vocational 10 institution. For purposes of this subdivision: (a) "veteran" shall mean 11 a member of the armed forces of the United States who served and was 12 honorably discharged or released under conditions other than dishonor- 13 able from such service, and presents an authorized veteran identifica- 14 tion card, and who is a resident of the state of New York at the time of 15 application for the program; and (b) "vocational institution" shall mean 16 a business, trade, technical or other occupational school approved as 17 such by the board of regents of the university of the state of New York 18 or accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or 19 association accepted as such by the regents of the state of New York. 20 § 2.
