PICHARDO -- read once and referred to the Commit- tee on Higher Education -- recommitted to the Committee on Higher Education in accordance with Assembly Rule 3, sec. 2 -- committee discharged, bill amended, ordered reprinted as amended and recommitted to said committee AN ACT to amend the education law, in relation to certain tuition waiv- ers for police officer students of the state university of New York and the city university of New York; and providing for the repeal of certain provisions upon expiration thereof The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem- bly, do enact as follows: 1 Section 1. Paragraph h of subdivision 2 of section 355 of the educa- 2 tion law is amended by adding a new subparagraph 1-a to read as follows: 3 (1-a) Notwithstanding the provisions of any other general, special or 4 local law, rule or regulation, such regulations shall permit police 5 officers, as such term is defined in section two hundred nine-q of the 6 general municipal law, who are enrolled in programs leading to baccalau- 7 reate or higher degrees at state-operated institutions of the state 8 university to attend up to two courses per semester or quarter without 9 tuition, provided that such tuition-waived attendance does not deny 10 course attendance at a state-operated institution by an individual who 11 is otherwise qualified under the regulations promulgated pursuant to 12 this section. 13 § 2. Paragraph (c) of subdivision 7 of section 6206 of the education 14 law, as added by chapter 548 of the laws of 2004, is amended to read as 15 follows: 16 (c) Notwithstanding the provisions of any other general, special or 17 local law, rule or regulation, the board of trustees shall promulgate 18 regulations to permit [members of the New York city police department19employed in the rank of police officer] police officers, as such term is 20 defined in section two hundred nine-q of the general municipal law, who EXPLANATION--Matter in italics (underscored) is new; matter in brackets [] is old law to be omitted.
