          on Governmental Operations
        AN  ACT to amend the executive law, in relation to prohibiting state and
          local law enforcement agencies from collecting or maintaining  certain
          information
          The  People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assem-
        bly, do enact as follows:
     1    Section 1. The executive law is amended by adding a new section  837-t
     2  to read as follows:
     3    §  837-t.  Specific information not to be collected or maintained.  No
     4  state or local law enforcement agency, may collect or maintain  informa-
     5  tion  about  the  political,  religious or social views, associations or
     6  activities of any individual, group, association,  organization,  corpo-
     7  ration, business or partnership unless such information directly relates
     8  to  an  investigation  of  criminal activities, and there are reasonable
     9  grounds to suspect the subject of the information is or may be  involved
    10  in criminal conduct.
    11    § 2. This act shall take effect immediately.
