CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel

An Act requiring radiation detectors on certain cranes and supplementing chapter 1 of Title 32 of the Revised Statutes.

Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.  Every crane operated by a marine terminal within the Port of New York District shall be mounted with a radiation detector approved by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

     2. This act shall take effect on the first day of the 25th month after enactment into law by the State of New York of legislation having an identical effect with this act, but if the State of New York shall have already enacted such legislation, this act shall take effect on the first day of the 25th month after enactment, but the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey may take such anticipatory acts in advance of that date as may be necessary for the timely implementation of this act upon its effective date, provided the State of New York has enacted legislation having an identical effect with this act.

STATEMENT

This bill would require all cranes operated by marine terminals within the Port of New York District to be mounted with a radiation detector.  The detectors would have to be approved by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Crane-mounted radiation detectors are an important screening tool which can help bolster our security by locating radiological weapons hidden in shipping containers.
