SYNOPSIS

     Requires emergency shelters for the homeless to admit persons with mental illness unless they pose danger.

 

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As amended on November 18, 2013 by the Senate pursuant to the Governor's recommendations.

  

An Act concerning emergency shelters for the homeless and supplementing P.L.1985, c.48 (C.55:13C-1 et seq.).

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    ¹[An] No person shall be refused admittance to an¹ emergency shelter for the homeless ¹[shall admit a] based on a perception or belief that the¹ person ¹[who]¹ has a mental illness ¹[and seeks shelter, or food and shelter, at the emergency shelter for the homeless]¹, unless ¹there is a reasonable basis to believe that¹ the person poses a danger to self, others, or property ¹, or if the basis for the refusal is otherwise authorized by law or regulation¹.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.
