SYNOPSIS

     Requires security guards at institutions of higher education which do not employ police officers to immediately report crimes committed on campus to the local police department.

An Act concerning the reporting of crimes at certain institutions of higher education and supplementing chapter 6 of Title 18A of the New Jersey Statutes.

 

     Be It Enacted by the Senate and General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

 

     1.    In the event that an institution of higher education does not employ police officers for the institution as authorized pursuant to P.L.1970, c.211 (C.18A:6-4.2 et seq.), a security guard at the institution who receives information that a crime has occurred on a campus of the institution shall immediately notify the local police department of the municipality or municipalities in which the campus is located, except that where the municipality does not have an organized full-time police department the security guard shall immediately notify the State Police.

 

     2.    This act shall take effect immediately.

 

 

STATEMENT

 

     This bill requires security guards at institutions of higher education which do not employ campus police officers to immediately report crimes committed on campus to the local police department. Under the bill, a security guard who receives information that a crime has occurred on a campus of the institution must immediately notify the local police department of the municipality or municipalities in which the campus is located. If the municipality does not have an organized full-time police department the security guard is required to immediately notify the State Police.
