SYNOPSIS
Designates November 2011 as "Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month".
CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
Introduced Pending Technical Review by Legislative Counsel
An Assembly Resolution designating November 2011 as "Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month" in New Jersey.
Whereas, Carcinoid cancer is a rare form of neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) resulting from changes in the hormone-producing cells that cause these cells to grow excessively though slowly; and
Whereas, Because carcinoid cancers and other NETs present symptoms similar to other diseases, these types of cancers are commonly under diagnosed and misdiagnosed, resulting in delayed treatment and care, which can negatively impact a patient's chances of survival and quality of life; and
Whereas, Carcinoid cancers and other NETs affect approximately 125,000 people in the United States each year, with approximately 11,000 new cases diagnosed annually; and
Whereas, Because carcinoid cancers and other NETs are considered rare, there has been a lack of public awareness of the disease and they are a low priority for medical research; and
Whereas, An increase in public education and medical services is important to reduce the misdiagnoses of carcinoid cancer patients and to enable early detection and treatment options to enhance the quality of life and survival rate of individuals with carcinoid cancer; and
Whereas, The New Jersey Carcinoid Network has played a vital role in supporting and educating carcinoid cancer patients in New Jersey, aiding the patient in finding the right physicians and treatments, and educating the public and the healthcare community about the hidden signs of this rare cancer and the most effective means of detection; and
Whereas, On November 5, 2011, the New Jersey Carcinoid Network will hold a conference in Edison, New Jersey, and bring many of the nation's leading carcinoid and NETs physicians to New Jersey to speak to patients and the healthcare community on the latest treatment options and research; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The month of November 2011 is designated as "Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month" in New Jersey in order to raise public awareness of this rare and often misdiagnosed disease, and to honor the work of the New Jersey Carcinoid Network which supports and educates New Jersey carcinoid cancer patients and assists in finding the right physician and treatment path for carcinoid cancer.
2. The Governor is requested to issue a proclamation calling upon public officials and the citizens of this State to observe "Carcinoid Cancer Awareness Month" with appropriate activities and programs.
