Recognizes March of 2014 as Irish History and Heritage Month.

An Assembly Resolution recognizing March of 2014 as Irish History and Heritage Month.
Whereas, Men and women of Irish decent have been a part of the fabric of American society and culture since our nation's founding and have contributed immensely to our nation's success and the character of our society; and
Whereas, During the colonial period in American history, an estimated 250,000 Irish men and women came to this country in hopes of creating a new life for themselves and their families in a new land; and
Whereas, During our nation's fight for independence more than one quarter of George Washington's Continental Army were of Irish birth or decent, and nine of the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were of Irish decent; and
Whereas, As of 2012 there were an estimated 34.1 million residents of Irish descent in the United States, including approximately 1.4 million people who are residents of New Jersey; and
Whereas, Families of Irish descent have proudly passed down their culture and heritage to future generations of Americans and made significant contributions to the history of the United States; and
Whereas, Irish-Americans have played an active role in our nation's armed forces, and have included General and later President Ulysses S. Grant, and approximately 150,000 soldiers who fought in the Civil War; and
Whereas, Americans of Irish descent have been awarded a countless number of Medals of Honor by a nation grateful for the military valor and heroic service of these individuals; and
Whereas, Irish culture is part of the fabric of American society and culture, as seen in the popularity of Irish dancing, Celtic music and song, and Irish-American literature; and
Whereas, Famous Irish-American cultural icons include painter Georgia O'Keefe, novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald, playwright Eugene O'Neill, poet Edgar Allen Poe, film director John Ford, and memoirist Frank McCourt; and
Whereas, Other remarkable Americans of Irish decent include Declaration of Independence singer Charles Carroll, the father of the modern submarine John P. Holland, automaker Henry Ford, labor union reformer Mary Harris, industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, President Andrew Jackson, President and former New Jersey Governor Woodrow Wilson, President John F. Kennedy, and President Ronald Reagan among many others; and
Whereas, It is fitting and proper for this House to recognize the many significant contributions that Americans of Irish descent have made to the history and culture of the United States; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. This House recognizes March of 2014 as Irish History and Heritage Month.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Secretary of State.
