A Concurrent Resolution urging the New Jersey Historical Commission to promote New Jersey's 350th anniversary.

Whereas, The year 2014 will mark the 350th anniversary of the colonization of New Jersey in 1664; and

Whereas, In 1664, the land between the Hudson River and the Delaware River was ceded to the English, and officially named New Jersey after the Isle of Jersey in the English Channel; and

Whereas, Since 1664, New Jersey has possessed a rich and illustrious history, from being the site of over 100 battles fought during the American Revolution and having two of its cities temporarily serve as the nation's capital, to aiding African Americans in their journey from slavery to freedom through the Underground Railroad and engaging in the mass production of war materials during World War II; and

Whereas, Today, the "Garden State," a name influenced by its 18th century agricultural fertility, is the ninth most populated state in the country, and is a leading industrial state with an economy focused on manufacturing, research, and tourism; and

Whereas, The distinctive history of the State has contributed to its originality, and has allowed it to play a unique and vital role in the United States; and

Whereas, It is fitting and desirable that New Jersey citizens commemorate the formation of their State, its subsequent history, and its present and future role in the United States during the 350th anniversary of the State; and

Whereas, The celebration of New Jersey's 350th anniversary will provide an appropriate forum for New Jersey citizens to rejoice and take pride in the fact that New Jersey is their home; and

Whereas, In order for the citizens of New Jersey to be aware of the State's 350th anniversary and to commemorate the event accordingly, the New Jersey Historical Commission, in furtherance of its mission of preserving the historical record of New Jersey and advancing interest in the State's past, should promote the momentous occasion; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey (the Senate concurring):

     1.    The New Jersey Historical Commission is respectfully urged to promote New Jersey's 350th anniversary through the development, planning, and coordination of events and activities to effectuate the purpose of promoting New Jersey's 350th anniversary.

     2.    Duly authenticated copies of this resolution, signed by the Speaker of the General Assembly and the President of the Senate and attested by the Clerk of the General Assembly and Secretary of the Senate, shall be transmitted to the Chair of the New Jersey Historical Commission.
